Rook-Sac Stockfish

If Stockfish can move a rook to a square you attack, it must, and it picks the best of those moves. Otherwise it plays normally.

How Rook-Sac Stockfish plays

  • If it can move a rook to a square you attack, it must. That includes squares its own pieces defend, so some of these are trades rather than outright gifts.
  • Among those rook moves, Stockfish 18 searches to depth 14 and it plays the best one. With no such move it plays normally.

How to beat Rook-Sac Stockfish

  • Early on its rooks are boxed in, so it plays ordinary Stockfish until a rook can move somewhere you attack.
  • Control squares its rooks can reach — open files and ranks — and every one becomes a move it may be forced into.
  • Take the rook when it is not defended. When it is, check whether the trade helps you before you accept it.

Does it always lose the rook?

It always offers it. Whether it loses material depends on whether the square is defended and whether you take.
