Light-Dark Stockfish

Stockfish’s first move lands on a light square, its second on a dark square, and it keeps alternating. When it has no move to the right colour it plays normally.

How Light-Dark Stockfish plays

  • On odd move numbers the piece it moves must land on a light square; on even move numbers, on a dark square. Castling counts by where the king lands.
  • Among the moves of the right colour, Stockfish 18 searches to depth 14 and it plays the best.
  • If it has no legal move to the right colour, it plays Stockfish’s best move as normal.

How to beat Light-Dark Stockfish

  • You always know which colour it needs next. Before you move, check whether the defence it needs lands on the wrong colour this turn.
  • Threats that can only be answered on one colour are the strongest: time them for the move where that colour is forbidden.
  • Repetition and the fifty-move rule are enforced: a position that comes back a third time is a draw.

Which colour does it start on?

Its first move lands on a light square, whichever side it plays.
