Copycat Stockfish

Stockfish plays the move that loses as much as your last move lost. Play perfectly and it plays perfectly; blunder a piece and it blunders one back.

Your move

How Copycat Stockfish plays

  • After each of your moves, the page measures how much your move lost against Stockfish’s evaluation (at depth 14).
  • On its turn the bot scores every legal move at depth 10 and plays the one whose loss against its own best move is closest to yours. Lose nothing and it plays its best; hang a piece and it looks for a move that loses about as much.
  • Before your first move there is nothing to copy, so it plays its best move.

How to beat Copycat Stockfish

  • Accurate moves get accurate moves back. You cannot win by trading errors one for one.
  • It copies how much a move loses, not what kind of move it is. An error in one position is not the same as an equal-sized error in another, so the game swings with each copied mistake.
  • Its loss is picked from its own depth-10 list; yours is measured at depth 14. The two do not always agree.

If I play perfectly, does it too?

Yes. A move that loses nothing is copied with its best move.
