If Stockfish has a checking move, it plays its best check, even when the check loses. Otherwise it plays normally.

How Must-Check Stockfish plays

  • If it has any legal move that gives check, Stockfish 18 searches only the checking moves, to depth 14, and it plays the best of them.
  • If no check is available, it plays Stockfish’s best move as normal.

How to beat Must-Check Stockfish

  • Its next move is predictable: if your king can be checked, it will be. Look at every check it has before you move.
  • Leave checks available that cost it something — a checking square your pieces cover, a check that pulls a defender away. It has to play one of them.
  • Keeping your king completely safe removes the rule, so it plays full-strength chess. Leaving harmless-for-you checks available is the way in.

No. Among its checking moves it plays the one Stockfish rates best.
